I’m Bill Abernathy—a Kansas City storyteller who’s lived a wonderfully ordinary life with some pretty extraordinary moments. I’ve always said weird things happen to me. In fairness, I may have encouraged a few of them along the way.

For years, I thought I was writing songs. Turns out, I was writing my life. The people, the places, the choices that worked out—and a few that seemed like a good idea at the time. They all found their way into the music.

These days, I’m putting those memories into Where the Songs Began, continuing to make a little music, and heading down the road to find new adventures and stories to tell. You’d think by now I’d know what happens next. Apparently, that’s not how this works.

Where the Songs Began is where I get to tell you the rest of those stories. Somewhere along the way, you may recognize a little of your own.

And remember… “If you hear a song that sounds like it was written about you, it may have been.”

The Long Road Here

For over four decades, I led global supply chain teams by day and wrote songs by night. Somewhere between spreadsheets, airports, and whatever needed fixing that week, the music kept finding its way into my notebooks.

I began recording and releasing albums while I was still in the corporate world. By the time I retired from that career on November 17, 2020, I had the successful Living the Dream seven-state tour behind me. Good thing I had plenty of vacation time from the “real job.”

I had two more tours planned for the next chapter. Apparently, COVID hadn’t read the itinerary.

Instead of touring, I spent COVID playing online shows and writing new music that would become Who Are You Who Am I and MORE. The notebooks kept filling up.

That wasn’t how I’d planned to close the touring chapter, but as I wrote in Changes:

“Change always teaches us to be everything we’re destined to be.”

I’m still making music. I just don’t sell tickets, and I get to pick where and when these days.

Life These Days

Home is a Kansas City loft with WORF—my stubborn, loyal, and hilarious Beabull, named after the Klingon warrior from Star Trek. Mornings start with a workout and the news. I change channels every 15 minutes to cut through the noise. WORF remains unimpressed.

Then I write whatever is on my mind, or my heart... Between life at home and my adventures, the notebooks rarely stay closed for long.

Hopefully, something in those pages makes you think, laugh, or maybe even feel a little less alone.

What Stays with Me

Who Are You Who Am I and MORE were submitted for GRAMMY consideration. I’m proud of that, and grateful for the listeners who helped these songs find their way.

But the messages that stay with me are the ones that say:

“That one... that’s my story too.”

That’s what it’s really all about—connection.
